March to the Capitol

(RICK HARTFORD / HARTFORD COURANT / March 5, 2009)

45417467.jpgChaplain Bilal Ansari of the Muhammad Islamic Center of Greater Hartford says a prayer before a march on the state Capitol Thursday. About 150 clergy and other supporters of the Interfaith Fellowship for Universal Health Care marched from the Muhammad Islamic Center on Hungerford Street in Hartford to the state Capitol Thurdsay afternoon to ask the governor to meet with them on health care issues after an earlier request for a meeting was rejected, they said. "We are hand-delivering this second request so you will understand our seriousness of purpose," the letter to Gov. Rell said.

Ansari's prayer:

O Lord, we come this afternoon

Heads bowed and eyes cast down

Before thy throne of grace.

O Lord-this afternoon-

Bow our hearts and uplift our minds,

And remind us of those who suffer in pain and fears.

We come this afternoon-

Like barren lands to a full harvest,

With urgent need of your divine bail out.

O Lord -open up a window of heaven,

And lean your Grace and Mercy our way,

And listen this afternoon to our prayers.

Lord, have mercy on proud and wasteful folk-

Folk who speak with the foul smell of corporate greed,

Whose work it is to keep silent the voices of healing.

Lord-come by this afternoon-

Make a house call for our sick folk,

And in our Capital House-this afternoon---

Open the heart of our governor, do a double by pass of compassion and care,

Call us close as witnesses to the sweet smell of your blessings,

And cleanse the hearts of proud folk in their gross state of waste.

And now, O Lord, our president Barack Hussein Obama,

Who lights the dark sky after a cloudy 8 years this afternoon-

Cast your sun rays on him so he reflects thy Wisdom,

And protect him from the evil shadows of racial hatred.

Cleanse him, Lord-this afternoon-

Wash him with honesty inside and out,

Hang him up and drain him dry of doubt.

Pin his heart to thy will and thy words,

And make his words mass weapons of truth-

Blowing up all around him hearts of deceit.

Lord God, this afternoon-

Place his eyes on the satellite vision of eternity,

And let him gaze upon the crumbling walls of time,

Lord, globally expand his imagination,

Send instant messages of progress on the blackberry in his hands,

Fill him with the filibustering dynamite of thy power,

Anoint him all over with the oil of thy salvation,

Set his tongue a blaze with thy praise.

And now, O Lord-

When we've done drunk our last cup of sorrow-

When we've denied our last child or elderly person access to health care-

When we've done giving the poor unequal quality of health care-

O-Most Merciful Compassionate God-

When we start down this street walking not by sight but by faith-

When we ministers and lay leaders from all religions come demanding Sustinet for all-

Open the ears of legislatures so they hear our voices of healing,

Bless this march and all your people in this land with universal health care-this afternoon-- we pray and say. Amen.
